FARM TO TABLE CHEF CAMP A TASTY CHOICE FOR SUMMER FUN! REGISTER NOW
Seeking to spark conversations about social interactions and healthy eating choices, AVPRIDE is offering a Farm to Table Chef Camp June 10-14 for grades K-5 (9 a.m. – 12) and grades 6-8 (1 to 4 p.m.). The camp takes place at the former Fayette Middle School, 450 Grady Ave., and includes field trips to several locations around Fayette County.
Highlights of the camp include tours to local gardens and farms to learn about growing food, a trip to the grocery store to learn about healthy choices and reading nutrition labels, visits to restaurants to learn about what happens in professional kitchens, and a cook off with mystery ingredients.
“Our kids today think food comes from packages and cooking is done in a microwave,” says Sheila Pace, AVPRIDE’s After School Enrichment Program manager. “We want to give them an opportunity to explore the food chain and get down to the roots of food and its connection to how food impacts our bodies and feelings.”
“Today’s busy world often results in meals being quickly prepared from packages, microwaved or or picked up from fast food restaurants. We want to give our kids an opportunity to explore the food chain from farm to table, and also learn how food impacts their bodies and feelings,” says Sheila Pace, AVPRIDE’s After School Enrichment Program manager.
Parents may be intrigued by another aspect of the camp: manners. Students will be exposed to such topics as how to have a conversation over a meal, setting the table, and proper table manners. “We’ll actually sit at the table and enjoy food and conversation without electronic screens,” says Pace.
